Hi everyone, so it has been one week since I have blogged. I’m so used to up staying late nights, however the starbucks double shot espresso cans are helpful. So my 2nd week in OSD600 was interesting as we learned how to stay connected with the open source community using various technology methods such as IRC, Mailing List, Blogs, Twitter, Bugzilla and etc.
IRC Communication
Among these, my favourite is IRC, which stands for Internet Relay Chat, I found it interesting because a lot of developers are on it and you can connect with them in a synchronized form (real time) and it’s very beneficial if you have questions to ask because your resource is greater, so you’re bound to get a wider range of answers as well as quickerJ. David Humphrey was able to show us how to use IRC and teach us a few interesting commands. He introduced us to “Mibbit” , which is an online web based IRC client…At first I found it to be very confusing but as we went through it , it was really simply yet powerful. One of my favourite command on IRC is “/me “your message”, because I find it cool how you can share your thought without directly saying anything to anyone :P.
Mailing List.
As one of the tasks for the “TODO” list was to join at least one Mozilla Mailing list.. So I joined Three and they are “dev-security” , “dev-quality” and “dev-apps-firefox”. First dev-security because I’m always interested in security as it plays an important role in the web development industry.. For dev-quality, I enjoy testing out products and discussing about them. Last of course “dev-apps-firefox” because of the obvious reason, I want to get involved with Firefox development.
Another update is that I also joined Mozilla Developer Center and Mozilla Wiki, I have not had the chance to explore both But Once I start coding or get my involvement in it, then it should be very interesting to look into and beneficial…
“Academic source code dust-up symptoms of CS education ills”
This is a fantastic article by Ryan Paul, talks about the learning system of today and how perhaps numbers are not everything…
Students need a practical approach to prove their abilities, as well as understand themselves better…I mean, it’s your passion that drives you towards success. You’ll want to learn something because you want to. Even if you fail, you will continue to dig at it and keep going at it, until you finally understand… I remember when I was in high school, my professor told me that programming may not be my career and I should reconsider. I refused to let that affect my decision, because I knew computers were my passion. I worked at it, and today I can call myself a programmer, all because I followed my passion towards computers. In fact, I would mess up my computer so often that I would have to take it to my uncle’s store. He became frustrated, telling me not to play around with stuff that I did not know… but now I can repair it on my own because of the fact that I messed around with it in the first place. This is how my understanding grew… So having said that, don’t let bad marks on tests or grades discourage you. If you want to be good at something, the only thing that comes in the way of that is time and effort. Drive yourself to make that distance shorter and finally reach your goal!
That’s it for now, bear with me, hopefully my writing will continue to improve and I will update more frequently..Have a great weekend guys!
